Founded in 1959 by a group of scholars in the humanities, anthropology, sociology, ethnology and mass-media studies, the Festival dei Popoli Institute, a not-for-profit organization, has been active for sixty years in the promotion and study of social documentary cinema. The association works primarily to organize Italy’s leading International Documentary Film Festival in Florence in November. Every year Festival dei Popoli is a unique event in Italy, with a rich program of international documentaries including an International Competition, the Italian Competition, retrospectives, Special Events, music documentaries, live performances. The Festival is a space for encounters, exchange of ideas, development of new projects for international filmmakers and professionals from all over the world. Over the course of activity, the Festival has dedicated retrospectives and tributes to the great masters of cinema among which: Jean Renoir, Jean-Luc Godard, John Cassavetes, Ken Loach, Nagisa Oshima, Lindsay Anderson, Aleksandr Sokurov, Jørgen Leth, Raymond Depardon. More recently the filmmakers in focus have been: Claire Simon, Thomas Heise, Peter Mettler, Isaki Lacuesta, Andrés Di Tella, Marcel Łoziński e Paweł Łoziński, Wojciech Staron, Vincent Dieutre, Jos de Putter, Mary Jimenez, Danielle Arbid, Kazuhiro Soda, Sergei Loznitsa. From 2017 more and more space have been dedicated to young and emerging filmmakers: the section Doc at Work Campus focuses on films produced by students of italian and international film schools, present in Florence during the Festival for a week of screenings and workshops.
