“Why do Black people have nightmares? Because the last nigger had a dream, he got shot!” The tone is set… a black humour to keep on going despite everything! Typical of direct cinema, “Game Girls” reels you in very quickly. Right from the start, you’re with Teri and Tiahna all the way, in the heart of poor, Black America drifting off course with its endless hassles but where the unexpected is just around the corner. One of the strengths of this film is that it takes us there without pathos. How do you cobble together a bearable life when everything is against it, starting with the self-destruction of the protagonists themselves? To do this, Alina Skrzeszewska obsessively highlights their lust for life in spite of everything. She films the two women’s desire for love and hopes of freedom, and this is where the movie’s energy becomes universal.
