Some of the residents of Maniquerville’s Gerontology Centre have forgotten how long they’ve been there. But they do have very clear memories of much earlier events. They also know how difficult it’ll be for them when they can no longer look at the trees in the large park surrounding the castle, no longer watch the passing of time between the young buds and the dead leaves, when the castle becomes a tourist attraction and they’ll be rehoused in town.
They’re living in an in-between world, between nature and the city, between tranquillity and departure. With Françoise, their reader in search of lost time, they drift like Proust among the comings and goings of strolls through time, between the numbness of the present and their memories revived by questions from Clara who organises their activities, and recorded for posterity by Pierre in his film. Each of them in their own way has offered them a chance to recapture the past.
