Born in Tel Aviv in 1945, Nurith Aviv began her career as a press photographer for the Israeli Army before gradually turning to video and film shoots. In 1975, she was recognised by the CNC (France’s National Centre for Cinema and the Moving Image) as a Director of Photography, the first woman in France to practise this profession. She has worked for Amos Gitaï, René Allio, Jacques Doillon and Agnès Varda. In 1989, Aviv began directing. From “Kafr Qar'a, Israël” (1989) to “Perte” (2002), she has filmed all over Europe. In 2004, she began to devote herself to a topic that fascinates her – Hebrew. From this reflection sprang a trilogy opening in 2004 with “D'une langue à l'autre”, continuing with “Langue sacrée, langue parlée” (2008) and concluding with “Traduire” (2010). In 2013, she made “Annonces”, followed by “Poétique du cerveau” in 2015. “Signing” (2018) and “Yiddish” (2020) continue her exploration of language.
