Here’s a chance to immerse yourself in an atmosphere that’s guaranteed to be 100% Summertime and 100% American. School’s out and it’s time to hang out with friends. The future directors of the feature-length “Pahokee” plunge us into the social and collective rituals of this Afro-American community from inland Florida, where setting off to the beach involves slang and improbable cars, codes and identical swimsuits. The strength of this short film, a prize-winner at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight in 2018, lies in its apparent modesty, capturing the lightness of this fleeting moment yet nevertheless allowing to surface topics such as racial and social segregation and uncertainties about what life will be like after school: college or the Army? Love or work? Bitter-sweet languor with the end of carefreeness already lurking in the near distance…
