Gigi immediately takes us along with him into his story, his truth, facing the camera. And we know that with this film, we’ll never be quite the same again. He’s 17, and lays his mattress down in the loft of Bucharest’s North Station. Monica’s 15, she lives with him and their mates, and they love each other. A social record of street kids in 1990s Bucharest? But it’s also a love story between a young woman with “butterflies in her head” and a young man ready to confront all the shit that lies in his path. And it’s also a brother-and-sisterly encounter between Belgian filmmakers Benoît Dervaux and Yasmina Abdellaoui and the Romanian teenagers for whom life hasn’t been easy, soon to be joined by a baby girl – theirs – Bianca. For Gigi and Monica, above all, they have to stick together and support each other, and the camera is determined to capture the energy of this tenacity.
