Peel

What moves us in this film is the grain of the paper. Not just that, but it plays a large part. The peel in question is also this grain, as well as being what skin becomes over the years. “Peel” sketches the downtime, with snatches of conversation told in fragments in the corridors of a retirement home. And it dramatises what it is: a sketch book. It shows its binding and its pieces of sticky tape. And it’s as though we’re accompanying the eyes and hand of the illustrator. We’re looking over his shoulder, fascinated by the precise, spontaneous lines that seem to be in the process of being drawn. How are these veined hands created, with all their angles, this unkempt hair, these wrinkles? Without realising it, by observing the drawings, we learn how things are.
