Imagine three slightly unworldly thirty-somethings setting off for the South of France… Toes in the sand, a drink in hand, or sitting at the fountain of a village they’re passing through, they tease one another while observing from a distance this country that isn’t their own. Although Maryam Goormaghtigh borrows the codes of road and buddy movies, with a few unfortunate attempts at flirting and other comic scenes, she makes a film that’s subtle and quirky, where time seems to stand still. She manages to make us feel these eternal students’ male camaraderie and sense of uprootedness. We can also sense the complicity of these non-actors portraying and dramatising their own lives. The result is a tender and touching film about setting off on holiday.
