The International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film is not only the biggest documentary film festival in Germany but has also acquired an international dimension over the years. Founded in 1955 by the East German film technicians’ club, it was the first independent film festival to be created in East Germany. In 1960, film director Wolfgang Kernicke gave it an international aspect and made it an annual event. Since then, the festival has been playing a key role in connecting Western and Eastern Europe, providing a space for discussion and exchange for filmmakers, producers, journalists, distributors, academics and viewers from all over Europe.
