Nato nel 1966, Audrius Stonys ha studiato cinema all'Accademia di Musica e Teatro di Vilnius sotto Henrikas Šablevicius, l'inventore del documentario poetico lituano negli anni '60, di cui è probabilmente il più importante erede. Born in 1966, Audrius Stonys studied Film at the Vilnius Academy of Music & Theatre, supervised by Henrikas Šablevicius, the inventor of Lithuanian poetic documentary in the 1960s, and became his most significant heir.
The European Film Academy honoured him with the prestigious Felix Award, given to the best documentary every year, for his first film "Earth of the Blind" (1992). Also shot on film, his following movies such as "Flying Over the Blue Field" (1996) and "Alone" (2001), explore the metaphysical themes he’s familiar with, paying attention to microcosms, people’s solitude, the passing of time, the invisible, memory and the inevitability of disappearance, central themes of "Countdown" (2004), "Uku Ukai" (2006), "The Bell" (2007) and "I Walked Through Fire" (2010).
His aesthetics, originally marked by a certain asceticism, silence and still frames, were enriched when he moved to digital video in, for example, "Ramin" (2011) and "Cenotaph" (2013).
He has taught in Japan, the USA (Berkeley and Stanford) and Barcelona. Since 2009, he has been pursuing his vocation as a teacher, especially in his homeland at the Lithuanian Academy of Music & Theatre and Vilnius’ Academy of Fine Arts. In 2018, Stonys completed his 21st film, "Bridges of Time".
