When Pierre Creton invites a friend to make a film with him, he’s asking him to join in with his game. It could be a childish invitation: let’s have fun making a film! He and Jean Lambert start off by both reading aloud at the same time, for “cacophony”. When the game’s cruelly interrupted by death, death is postponed so that the film continues in an infinite conversation that grants Jean life after death.
In this way, far from being a tomb for Lambert, the film is his jubilant refuge where he can declaim the words of the philosopher Cioran, conduct the concert of waves at the foot of the cliffs and have his hair cut by his director friend: entrusting everything to him because he’s organising the game and decides how and where to cut (the take). Otherwise “you’ll be wasting your time, only the poetry’s any good” Jean says to Pierre.
