Ada’s nineteen. She agrees to go and have dinner with a boy she knows. Everything happens very quickly, and she doesn’t put up a fight. In 2013, after the screening of her first film, Alexe Poukine meets her, a woman her own age who describes what happened to her nine years earlier, and who doesn’t know what to do about it. From then on, the filmmaker is haunted by this story and its implications, confronted with her received ideas about rape and the knowledge that many of her friends have suffered a similar experience. She sets out to find a form that can embody the words and encourage people to talk about it, questioning and examining the dark recesses of human nature from both sides. Ada’s account is joined by those of others, all different but still similar – the same gruesome story, senseless and banal, seen from different angles. Weaving together people and words, experiences and pain, Sans Frapper (That Which Does Not Kill) is overwhelming in the sincerity it manages to convey with strength and sensitivity.
